I have the perfect smoothie for you! It’s healthy and indulgent, all in one. I promise.
Just to clarify… this is not one of those bracing superfood smoothies, full of veggies and green stuff, seeds of various sorts, protein powders, or other strange ingredients, blended together in an effort to make them taste palatable. Not that I can’t appreciate the value in a smoothie like that…
But this smoothie just isn’t that. It’s healthy without trying, rich and sweet naturally, and made with simple wholesome ingredients that just go together. The result is an indulgent smoothie that tastes a bit like dessert, while still qualifying to be healthy. So you don’t have to feel guilty!
I love cherries. They always seem extra-special because they are really only available for several weeks per year. And now, we live in an area that is famous for it’s cherries and there are little stands all over selling cherries that were picked that very morning. Yum. The weather is just cool enough at night and sunny enough during the day to create some of the juiciest, sweetest cherries around. We drove through the orchards last year around this time, and the branches were laden with deep red fruit, some branches weighed almost to the ground. Since I picked some of these lovelies up at the Farmer’s Market the other day, I just had to share a cherry recipe with you. Truth be told, I like them best just as they are, right off the stem. But we had so many, I had to freeze some before they went bad, which is just perfect for a decadent smoothie.
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 cup frozen pitted dark cherries
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 3-4 ice cubes
- 1 tbsp miniature chocolate chips (optional)
- stevia, to taste (if desired)
- Combine the almond milk, frozen cherries, cocoa powder, ice cubes, and chocolate chips (totally optional, but add if you want extra chocolatey richness) in a high powered blender. Blend until smooth.
- Add stevia (or your preferred sweetener), ½ tsp at a time, blending after each addition, to desired sweetness.
- Serve immediately.
The ice is totally optional, but I add it because I like my smoothies to stay extra frosty.
The chocolate chips are also totally optional, and to be honest, this smoothie tastes rich and delicious without them.
Be sure to taste your smoothie prior to adding any sweetener. My fresh cherries were plenty sweet and did not require any additional sweetener.
Recipe adapted slightly from Heather’s Dish.
